For those of you who ask if I've heard from Scott lately:

AIM IM with Scott Howard : Fri 8/15/08 1:32 PM

Scott Howard: Mark... you there....
Scott Howard: HI.
Mark Winn: Totally here.
Scott Howard: Action Leather vs Nubuck?
Mark Winn: My preference?
Mark Winn: Action Leather.
Scott Howard: That's what I thought...
Mark Winn: Nubuck attracts dust like no other.
Mark Winn: 1. Suede.
Mark Winn: 2. Smooth leather.
Mark Winn: 3. Action leather.
Mark Winn: 1,000,000. Nubuck
Mark Winn: Of course that's not very animal friendly.
Scott Howard: Is action leather from cow?
Mark Winn: I believe it contains Hide of Cow, yes.
Scott Howard: What would I do w/o you?....
Mark Winn: Have one less tall/bald friend probably.
Scott Howard: Correct.

We had one of those 'good times/good friends' nights that we really need more of. Refreshing to just kick back with tacos, belgian ales, rum and Jenga!!!
KARLA MAKES HER MOVE While Estelle and Kanye hang in suspense and Busta Rhymes screams 'Gimme some mo!'(macbook pro). CASEY PULLS HIS PIECE and PLACES IT. I think, at this point we had reached 22 inches. ALLY CAME THROUGH WHILE KARLA FELL ASLEEP and TIFF WAS LEFT with only a few choices.

That ended up being the last round before it crashed and everyone went their merry ways. Thanks for the night everyone.

Juuuuuuuuuuust in case you didn't know, THIS IS HOW ALLY IS ROLLING right now, thanks to some pesky car thieves. UPDATE: The lower center grill is also now missing due to a rain-boot in the middle of the 5 freeway. Do you think that someone is now prancing around with one wet foot while the other is bone-dry? Chances are, both are dry due to our recent weather. Also, do you think he/she has any idea that the boot he/she is now missing caused $400 in damage to a 3 week old car?

Early skate session today because Tom Blosch was in town. We drove up north to skate the PQ park for a few hours. Tom, you need a good coating of Rustoleum and you're good for the summer. The 'sesh' ended LIKE THIS at about 11:30 AM.
Oh, and Tom, consider your damn self congratulated! I'm like, totally, like stoked out to the max for you! We think you're making a good decision for once. HA!!!

I'd like to wish my good friend and superior SCOTT HOWARD (FAR LEFT) a very large heap of luck as he relieves himself as Art Director of DC Shoes, Inc. and moves on to greater creative assignments. Peace kid, let's do some skateboarding in the near future.

And so it goes...

E.ASY DOERS SUNDAY RIDE: We helped loosely organize a bike ride to Coronado via the ferry that crosses the San Diego Bay from the end of Broadway. About 15 people met up in the usual parking lot, rode to the ferry and max'd and relaxed while we floated for about 10-15 minutes. Coronado has the widest and smoothest roads in the county, not to mention people that respectfully share the road. If only the wind were as courteous. Following a harsh ride around the island (which isn't really an island) we had lunch at Coronado Brewing Company and caught the next boat back to the mainland. No flats and easy-running all day, which is how Sundays should be. Thanks everyone for showing up, it was killer. Proof:

Wenger and BILLY happened to be in Los Angeles yesterday and rolled down to chill only to end up watching the Super Bowl at Fousts as a result. Billy's healing pretty well after getting his face smashed up in a construction accident in "Carson City"(Elko) Nevada. He's so dang tough.

Scott finally broke out the guide book and we found a spot for some sashimi beneath a glam shopping mall. II think the chef tried to kill us with wasabe until Scott Hoverboard told him to ease up a bit. After we ate, we found a British (losely themed) brew pub 30 taps of unheard of beers. I had a selection that was dedicated to the late John Peel and that made me feel good about the night. And that's that right there for the most part.

Travel day: I've been a little stomach-sick today, I think because of the shift in diet. I had bought some books on Saturday at the Page One bookstore that were removed from their sack and stored in my luggage in case I needed the a barf-bag. The time was passed by staring at the floor and thinking about all the track bikes I'd see in Tokyo. Once we had checked in at the airport, Scott helped me out with a little ginger and hot water to calm the nausea.

We arrived in Tokyo a and took an hour bus ride from the Narita Airport to our hotel in Shibuya. Basically it's like this: nice hotel-check, open shower with trough-like drain-check, gourmet curry vegetable room service-check, and I'm going to bed.

It's Sunday right now, which is like being in the future compared to back home. I asked a few people (one being my father and the other JFly) how they felt about me being in the future and neither of them really thought it mattered at all. Just remember you guys, I'm always 16 hours ahead of your time.

We caught the bus to Stanley and hit up the knock-off market. I actually ended up taking a different bus because I had to get off to use the 'Male Toilet' about 10 minutes into the ride. So I rode solo for the rest of the 40 minute ride and somehow ran into 'Hatchcoat' at Stanley Market just before they sat down to eat. I didn't buy anything either, because I don't really get into buying stuff for some reason.

After returning to Lan Kwai Fong, we found an organic restaurant with a good dub/reggae sountrack, organic ales, and the first and best Portabello Mushroom Steak I've ever had.

Hong Kong is truly sensory overload and I could probably wander it's patchwork of streets until my last gasp and love every minute of it. In fact, HK has been every Loverboy hit all wrapped into one: Working for the Weekend, Turn me lose, and Lovin' Every Minute of It. Although, this is China and not Canada!

I'll start by saying that today (saturday locally) started out thursday, January 3rd at about 7:30 PM Pacific time. I was picked up by an executive car and rushed to Los Angeles International Airport along with the other three people in our Art Dept. After a 1 hour ride, 2 hours in LAX and 15 hours jammed into an airplane seat built for a short-midget we arrived in Hong Kong, China.

Despite an annoying currency acquisition problem, we made the train and the shuttle to Lan Kwai Fong and to our hotel of the same name, mad clever. I'm going to skip the descrip and sum the day up using a borrowed word from the ever descriptive Tom Robbins and tag this spot with the word 'VIVID'. I do so in all caps because I feel it best represents the vertical rise of the city.

Want that-take that.

Now that it's nighttime and I'm sitting in my window typing, I'd like to ad is that I'm stoked to be here with a crew of very strongly creative people. Photos:

First of all, Merry Xmas to everyone, and I use the 'X' because I wish to wish everyone a happy day...which I should do every day. Started out the day with having Fly and Sara*Sara over for some breakfast out in the yard. McKinney joined us a little bit later and we set out on a ride. Everything was easy running, we set out by riding down through Mission Hills and down to the bay where we caught the ferry over to Coronado. That island has the smoothest and widest roads in San Diego, I do believe. We ended up at City Deli in Hillcrest because 1. We like it, and 2. It was the only thing open. Photos:

We tried to have an early morning skate at the Irvine Spot today but it turned out to be a nooner. Teit, Dr. Dix & I rolled up to the spot and ran into the rest of the San Clemente crew at El Toro later in the day. It's way more fun than just a little bit to skate with all of those dudes. Big thanks to Teit for both driving and snapping these:

To all my friends with iPhones: Stop! The pesky little devices are now making their way into my dreams and it's to the point where I actually own one--until I wake up. it's wicked and weird and much too vivid. That's all. I'm cool with everything else you're doing.

Keep on keeping on.

I'm about to drive across Camp Pendleton and into the office, just so you know. It looks like there was another fire at the truck scales at 6AM this morning. Right now, the CHP website says everything is cool on the 5S. I'll try to snap some more photos.

10-4!

Wednesday, October 24, 2007
A tanker type jet just flew over accompanied by two helicopters and it sounds like people have mistaken a backfire as a real fire at the checkpoint. The sun outside my window is neon-red:

A ton of helicopters in the sky right now. Ash looked like snowflakes last night. I don't think I'm going to work today, for my parents, wife and others concerned.

Just kind of watching this stuff: Breaking news from the television and CHP say that the fire is 4 miles from San Clemente and headed Northwest. The 5 freeway is now closed to both northbound and southbound traffic.

Our offices have been closed both yesterday and today so I'm kicking it, with a deadline that was supposed to be Monday lurking. Had a sushi lunchbox with Dr. Howard the Art Director and rode my bike down to campgrounds out of curiosity. All full, mostly cars and people wandering around and chatting on their phones.
Thanks to all the friends and family who have called, as they have learned we're nowhere near the fires, except for the new one that flared up today on Camp Pendleton (photos below). Hopefully it fizzles out and I can make it to work tomorrow. It's weird not being able to go to get business done. Some images from the day:

Eerie days with this fire stuff. I left the office last night at 2:30 AM and got home at 3. By the time I woke up at 6:45 the GTI was covered in ash and soot. It sounds like my commute might be trecherous driving south across the base and into oceanside due to the 15 closures. Cover your faces everyone, right now bandanas can be used for more than just profiling like you're some hipster bandito. Be safe.

We received tragic news on Saturday that my uncle Karl N Pedersen (my real uncle as opposed to Tom, who isn't really my uncle) had passed away. So off to Utah we go! Due to some gnarly work deadlines we had to make a short trip to Salt Lake City for the funeral. Ally (my wife as you all know) and I flew out on Wednesday night and returned early enough on Friday morning to make my lunch meeting (which turned into a different lunch meeting for goofy reasons). The funeral services were peaceful and it was great to see long lost relatives. Later that night we had dinner at my sisters place and hung out with the Royal-Fam. Good times for bad reasons I guess. Karl, hate to see you go... but I'm happy you're at peace. That's basically how I feel about death and dying I guess. Photos:

We just got back from San Diego where UNCLE DICK and his girl Amy were visiting. We cooled it in Ocean Beach, scooped up some lunch and eyed up the coastal wildlife. The evening found us on the island of Coronado (an island that's only almost an island at best) where we partook of some hillbilly soda at the park with hundreds of oddly normal people listening to a cover band play old rock n roll hits. I'm not really into 'hits' so I got down with some killer people watching, I totally have to have a VISOR LIKE THIS ONE. Tom, nice having you here, even though it was short. Amy, wonderful to finally meet you and know that you actually exist. Thanks for showing us two new restaurants as well.

We had to take a break from hanging out with my sister for a co-ed bridal shower for Pat and Laura, the only two IN THIS PHOTO who aren't wearing white shirts (I guess they haven't yet caught the summer-time vibe). I'd congratulate them on here, but I'll probably do that in person sometime during the month of September. THIS was the expected reaction to my lt.edition King of LA, Lakers colored DC shoes. I'm glad JBeezy wasn't there to give me heck.

It's not often enough that we have family in town, even if it isn't our town. My sis flew to San Diego for a weekend of golfing Torrey Pines so we drove down daily to chill. It seems that I only took photos at the Padres game, which they lost miserably to Seattle. Ally was a bit disappointed that Brian Giles sat the game out. It's all flying by really quick, as weekends often do. I'll be sad to see her go tomorrow night. Here are some photos from the game:

A few of us from the creative department at DC, and Ally, took a limo up to the venue in hollywood and were the first ones there, which kind of makes showing up in a stretch rather uneventful. Today, Matt, Mike Dakota, Teit, Alikai, and I had an all day session that started out at a school in Aliso Viejo. Teit rode all the way up there and realized that he had TWO RIGHT SHOES. Mike got busy with a FS BLUNTSLIDE while our favorite Denmark native ran back to San Clemente and picked up a left shoe. We skated a bunch of places in Irvine, checked a few infamous spots, and ended up at a ditch right off of PCH. It was like old times, waking up, skating all day, and then cooling out at night over a few drinks. Here are a few more photos:

Ally and I had planned on driving up the coast and camping above Santa Barbara at El Capitan State Park. I jumped online and tried to book a campsite only to find out that the place is booked for every weekend until next October. We decided to buy tickets to THE PADRES GAME against the Rockies. Half way throught the game SARA (Head of the Stacy Loves Weiner Club) joined us with tickets that were $50 less than ours. The Padres won 3-2 and treated us to A FIREWORKS SHOW after the game. Those guys, they are so damn nice.

Micah is in town and refuses to go out at a decent time. Most of us have important places to be on a Tuesday morning I think. I still had a chance to CHILL SATURDAY NIGHT, when most normal people who work hard every day chill. See, I don't know how it is in Eastern South Dakota or anything, but us Californians needs to be on point during the week so we can pay our debts (even if we're actually just from Utah). MIKE AND VINCE were there also. Matt needs to step up his carpet-skating.

I'm a commuter again, at least until Ally gets her situation sorted out and we decide to move south. I'm really hyped on it right now for some reason. Most likely for these four reasons:
1. A fast car with good MPG.
2. Good music & my friends at NPR.
3. No traffic to speak of (even on Fridays dog).
4. Constant eye-full of the ocean.
It gives me time to just push the right foot down and do some introspective thinking. As much as I hate the idea of cars and driving, I love driving cars. This was my MORNING RIDE.

I just got back from ASR mayhem. We were in San Diego for less than 24 hours and I'm relieved to be home. I had a chance to take some friends out to two of my favorite SD eateries, Wit's End in Hillcrest and Sol Luna Cafe at the bottom of the former El Cortez Hotel. I also got to chill out with Justin, my main homie at Street Machine. I'm sorry I missed a lot of you while I was down, we'll kick-it next time. Wedding trip Days 2-3: It's not like I was expecting the weather to change, but the rain eventually fizzled out and was replaced by hellish winds. The gusts managed to blow out most of the storm, leaving the wedding day bright and sunny (and cold). I've decided to just post the images, since I enjoy photos of the events much more than I like writing about them. I will say that I'm extremely happy for Jason and Emily...Love you guys.

Ally and I are both rolling bike style these days because we figure it's better for us (even though cruising in the Rubicon with the top down is the jam), it's better for everyone in general, and we get a chance to see a lot of the small details of the 'hood. They opened an off-highway bike path along the PCH at San Juan Capistrano Beach, so we rode that up to the Dana Point harbor and back. Saw a lot of weekend warrior cyclists in their wonder-bread spandex, I guess that's how they do up in hrr. I think I'm allergic to all-a that.

Usually Las Vegas drives me nuts and within 24 hours of being there, I'm looking to high-tail it back across the desert seeking sanctuary from the blinking lights and jackpot ringers. This time, for J$'s bachelor party, I was accompanied by some seldomly seen good friends, which helped me last a whole 2.5 days in the 'City of Sin'. Having good friends makes things a lot more pleasant I think. Ever a fan of a good slogan, I'm sticking to the Vegas motto of 'What Happens in Vegas...', with the exception of these three photos:

She was a lovely animal and lived a wonderful life, all while helping us do the same. We learned a lot from Eden and she'll always be with us. It's going to be a bit lonely for a while, so if anyone wants to visit, give us a ring. *snif*

From now on (depending on the weather conditions), I will be riding to work on a lot less rubber and metal, while using zero gas and emitting no emissions. Thanks to suggestions from couple friends and an ebay seller I have purchased a MID 80'S NISHIKI OLYMPIC 12 (PHOTO) for commuting purposes. If all goes well, my dependency upon the automobile and its expensive fuel will come to an end on either Wednesday or Thursday.

Some HOT HEATERS coming your way in November from C1RCA, only 100 pairs are being made. Period! My best Danish friend, Teit Andersen, is partly to blame for these. Of course, 'my best Danish friend' is also my 'worst Danish friend' right now, since he's the only person from Denmark I am in contact with these days (Tobia, where are you?).

We're finally back from our July 1-9th dash across the desert for a houseboat vacation at Lake Powell. Typical vacation for the Winns, as I later explained to ally, with things blowing up, weather, electrical problems, multiple engine failures, and a genuine good time under the circumstances. If there's one gold nugget of knowledge I've gained from the Royal Winn Family, it's how to manage a disaster and have a blast doing it. "People of zee wurl, relax!" - Sailor Boy (the parrot). People photos coming soon

Justin and his girl have a dog named BUDDY. Which makes me want a dog.

The WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS is on right now and Raja Bell just went down with what they say might be a pulled hamstring (he said he heard it pop). I wish him the best of luck and hope his situation isn't serious. I'm fiercly rooting for the Suns in this series because of my strong distaste for Marc Cuban as a person (which even had me rooting for the spurs in the semi finals). Right now game 1 isn't going too well for Phoenix. The report just came back on Bell, turns out he has a right calf sprain and won't return. NOTE: Phoenix won the first game, but Dallas eventually won the series, which I'm sure you know. Go Miami!!!

I rarely turn on the television, Ally can testify to that. I did so tonight to watch the SUNS/CLIPPERS Playoff Game 6 but ended up watching a documentary on a charming old woman trying to get into the Royal Academy of Arts in London, England. MARY CANE-HONEYSETT possesses a simplistic charm seldom found these days, and her work is wonderful. I reccomend.

How does Justin Fly survive an Instant Message barrage from yours truly? He tells me he's already seen it all, that's how. He then hits me back with THE TRUTH, so it's all-good, as they say.

Slam X Hype has posted an article featuring my WORK FOR UNSOLED (BTW, I didn't do the logo above the shop, nor did I have anything to do with the website). Incedentally, I just hung up the phone from a 2 hour(+) conversation with Chris from Unsoled. Everything seems to be going well for them, which is good to hear. Much respect to him and his family (they're now expecting). The Unsoled work is available for review in my PORTFOLIO.

New section up in the navagation bar. COLLECTORS ITEMS, as mentioned last week, will be for me to brag about all the cool stuff people are sending me. If anyone else wants to send me anything random, EMAIL me for my address...just as long as it's neither a bomb nor anthrax. Now, if only I could get a hold of Q to fix how my logo displays in Safari.

Finally opened my mail box (the one on the front of the house) the other day after the lock malfunctioned (a favorite word of mine). I received some more ZOMACK madness. I will be posting in a new directory for my collected artwork tonight, if I don't get back from LA too late. For now, I've posted a sort of STICKER HIJACK from one of the labels he sent.

I did some serious work on the SKETCHBOOK section getting some past sketches in and logging as much information as possible. I just realized that it's 1:03 AM. So it's officially the 6th of April and I know one of these days is JUSTIN FLY's birthday. Despite what I said earlier, I would like to wish the guy a happy birthday, and if I were weird enough to live in Minneapolis as well, I would take him out for some MAUDITE (damned) and celebration (or CELEBRATOR if they had any). Hope everyone enjoys whatever it is that they should be enjoying. One love kid.

6AM is just the right time to wake up. Everything is cast in a blue stainless steel light ...exactly the right shade. Sipping some Verona with the windows cracked enough to hear the chatter of the dawn birds variety-pack. The morning is for true G's man, I'm telling you, it's mad real right now. I had a good conversation with DR DAN ZOMACK MD this morning about being young and highly mobile. And why not be young, I'm into it for sure.

Later that day...Nothing is better, after eating a nice dinner and going for a long drive down a long country road (as country as it gets in Southern California) and sipping a cup of coffee and chatting about the future and enjoying a solid downpour of rain, than coming home and putting on your lazies to chill out for some serious nerding. Nothing is funnier to me than vestigal runon sentances that have more than their share of the word 'and', and may, or may not, have misspelled words sprinkled here and there like perils on a birthday cake that has been cooked for no reason at all, let alone some someones poor birthday. Silly kids these days. Happy Birthday never justin, you ruined everything...hope you find a nice name for your fish.

Things get crazy here, and then things get back to normal. Right now I'm hoping things get back to normal really quickly. Deadlines are bonkers when you're relying on another department to get you the information you need.

Today is a DE LA SOUL discography type of day if I've ever seen one. Springtime is upon us (although you would never know in californias perpetual spring time). All the windows are open and I'm chilling out, sipping an iced coffee drink, and waiting for Ally to get home from work. Kitty is sleeping by the door making a nappy nap seem appealing. Rough life, that's for sure.

My first post in the intro section brings big news. I have accepted a job with another shoe company based out of San Clemente, California. Ally and I will be moving north shortly, and will hopefully update everyone with new contact info. The job brings forth new opportunities to work for a smaller company. It's all about job advancement. knahmeen? San Diego, we'll miss you. *snif*
